Fennel, oh how she shines

Picture
Fennel, she's a Show Stopper everywhere she goes with her finely scented hair…I mean feather-like leaves…..
When in your cart,  your fridge, or just standing in your kitchen, guests will flock to see what the heck it is, (all the while hoping it's not some new experiment!)

This cancer fighting, inflammation reducing, cholesterol slashing Feathery Fennel is a free radical warrior superfood and lucky for you, it's in season now!

Its part of the Parsley, Dill, Carrots, & Coriander family….wow no Wonder She Shines! What a family!

Fennel is easy to cook, and is a marvelous addition to salmon, potatoes, avocados, scallops, dips, or even as a sandwich topper!

Coming soon in the RECIPES section I will post two of my favorite Show Stopping Fennel dishes:

-Roasted Fennel & Potatoes
-Casablanca Shellfish & Fennel Tagine

Just keep paddlin'...

Picture
Tena (left) & Cynthia (right)
While shooting TV episodes in Miami, Tena and I dashed over to South Beach on our day off.
Lugging our rented paddle boards across the sand we noticed our dainty Lifeguard suiting up in rescue mode. The waves were high and we didn't appear to be paddle board maestros. Who Us?

Cynthia Aguilar had a gentle spirit and kind smile. As we chatted, asking her tips on boarding, we soon found out...

Don't toss out the fruit!

Picture
One of the biggest complaints I hear is the frustration of having to throw out fruit before getting a chance to indulge because it's gone bad. I learned this tip from my friend Fleur, one of New Orleans' top make-up artists:

Chop it all up in a big bowl, and somehow the flavors mesh together and become even more tasty. All the fruit gets eaten and household pals feel they've taken a trip to the Caribbean!

"It's like eating a Hug"

Picture
You may have seen the story in the Travel section under Portland, where I wrote about The Whole Bowl. It’s a perfectly balanced meal in one bowl of food. “It’s like eating a hug” the creator proclaims. Once I finally got my husband to try it, he became addicted to it, and claimed he always had more energy after eating a bowl of it. Not to mention the fact that it is just simply delicious!

Along with the perfect balance of nutrition and flavors, the biggest secret to The Whole Bowl  is the Tali Sauce. Tali sauce is one of those unique spices-of-life and once you’ve tasted it, you have to have it again...and again....and again. The sauce is a “lemony-garlicky concoction” and when combined with the other ingredients, turns the bowl of food into an orchestra for your mouth!

So when I got home from Portland, I went on a mad research frenzy to re-create the recipe. Thank goodness I wasn't the only one attempting this task. Torontogirlwest.com had good sucess, so I followed some of her tips and added some of my pizzaz to get what I feel is a very Oh-So-Close Tali sauce. I hope you enjoy the bowl as much as we do:  WHOLE BOWL RECIPE

Geoff and the Red-Tailed Parrot

Picture
Being the lead actor on a TV show lends very little free time. After a grueling 15 hour day of work, Geoff Stults then has to memorize the next day’s dialogue. Yep, all the teachers of his past would be proud to know he does his homework!

At lunch, when he’d really rather be sleeping, he opts to work out - no matter the location. Before heading back to filming, he’ll often come to the hair trailer drenched, (from swimming laps in the ocean), in desperate need of a restyle.

While in the hair and makeup trailer, we make kale salad, green tea blends, turmeric tonics, protein drinks and anything we can find to keep this hard-pressed dude going.

When Geoff isn’t working, he’s part owner of Rock & Reilly’s, a rock n’ roll pub on Sunset Blvd. While Geoff’s drink of choice is Guinness, his character Walter on the TV show “The Finder” has an endless array of favorite cocktails that “have purpose.”
Seeking a "Walter" favorite, we recently discovered...

A Delivery for V-Day

Picture
Sometimes on set, the hours get so long, the only way to wake myself up is to disappear into a book - even if it's only for a quick ten minute break. It's the lure to escape to another place; to learn something new. It was one of those long, late nights that I stumbled upon the interesting career of the Dabbawala....

The garden that almost wasn't

I'm a huge fan of Chef Jamie Oliver and was thrilled with his network show “Food Revolution," which focused on helping our nation return to fresh, real food. Jamie shared many revolutionary tips with his viewers, and one of my favorite episodes was when he encouraged a public school to plant a garden. Watching food actually grow not only helped students to see and learn about where food comes from, but enlightened them to how delicious it tastes in its natural state, versus the boxed faux food filled with chemicals that our culture has come to rely on.
